Schmelzer got a broken hand injury when Dortmund lost 0-1 to Hamburg last weekend. Yet 26-year-old defender played the full 90 minutes.
After the game Schmelzer undergo examination by a medical team and required surgery which makes the action for four weeks.
"Marcel Schmelzer metarcarpal fractured bone in his right hand while the Bundesliga match against Hamburg on Saturday," said team doctor Markus Braun on the team's official website.
"The operation was a success Schmelzer last Saturday night and is predicted to be sidelined for four weeks," he continued.
This injury is the second time this season experienced by Marcel Schmelzer after he disturbed a groin injury when preseason sessions.
Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp was increasingly contrived dizzy remembering previously he had lost Marcos Reus, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Ilkay Guendogan, Jakub Blaszczykowski, Nuri Sahin, and Olivier Kirch due to injury.
Moreover, the current Dortmund slumped in position 13 with 7 points from 7 matches, after getting their fourth defeat of the season. Mkhitaryan Guendogan lucky and will be playing again in recent weeks.
"He (Guendogan) can be included in the squad after the international break. Reus would be normal practice again," said Klopp.
"Mkhitaryan will hopefully normal practice in 3, 4, or 5 days," said him.
